I'm really impressed by the quality and ease of use of these binoculars. They give a lovely sharp image right across the field of view; they are light and easy to adjust, and I love the quick conversion of the eye pieces you can make for specs wearers. My only slight criticism would be that the very comfortable strap is a bit long for bird watchers - I like to have them resting on my chest rather than on my diaphragm while walking around.

Excellent for wildlife and general use, 8 Nov 2011

I've had various pairs of bins over the years and recently took one of my more recent purchases on a wildlife safari where their limitations in terms of brightness and field of view became very quickly all too obvious. I borrowed a good pair of 8x42s from the safari company (these were Lynx which aren't readily available in Britain) and resolved to get an equivalent pair asap.

At home I like to do a bit of bird watching and also like to take a pair out when walking etc. From what I tried out before buying the Monarchs, I concluded that the "quality curve" is quite steep up to around the £200 level but after that it flattens quite quickly and unless you're a keen and frequent user paying much more than £200-250 probably isn't worthwhile.

I chose the Monarchs because they just seemed such a well thought-out package. They feel solid and well-made without being too heavy (though I'd definitely recommend handling a pair before buying). The lens covers stay attached in use, with the front covers flapping down and being very easy and quick to re-fix. The bins are easy to adjust and give a bright view even in poor light - which has certainly aided bird identification on our feeders. They're comfortable to handle with a good adjustable strap. I can really recommend these for people wanting something better than one of the budget brands but not wanting to take out a second mortgage.

One of my hobbies is birdwatching, I bought these binoculars to replace my old Leitz Trinovid 10x40's (25 years ago the Trinovids were the bee's knees, but optics have moved on a lot since then). Replacing with the equivalent modern Leitz/Leicas would have been a VERY expensive, but would also have given me much heavier binoculars (I do a lot of walking, so weight is important to me). I was able to try a good range of binoculars side-by-side (although it was on a lovely sunny day, so not the best test conditions) and was very happy with the optics and the light weight of the Nikons. The low price was an extremely welcome bonus.

Some binoculars can be tricky to use with spectacles. Having tried these 8x42's, a spectacle-wearing friend of mine was impressed enough to buy a pair for himself.

I've now had them for more than a year and have never regretted buying them. I would recommend these 8x42's to anyone who wants a serious pair of binoculars without having to take out a second mortgage.

Binoculars can be a very personal thing, one size most definitely does not fit all. So, although reading reviews may help you narrow down your choice, there is no substitute for actually comparing different models 'in the field'.

Needed small waterproof bins for bird watching from a kayak and wanted good performance without breaking the bank, so Zeiss et al were beyond my reach. These strike the price/performance balance perfectly for me. For small binoculars the definition is very good, not quite up with my larger pair of Poyser Eagles 8x42 but not far off. They seem robust and well made and a major bonus is the ability to focus down to 1.5 metres. Because of their size they'll get taken everywhere and so used much more than larger ones. Took 6 days to arrive from soletuk in Germany and all completely hassle free. Very happy with this purchase.

An excelent piece of equipment, it really does what it says it does.
I set it up in the back garden, switched it on, and it knew where it was, I saw jupiter and three moons, I also saw the great spot

I visited WHICH to find out what they recommended as there are so many bewildering choices for binoculars! Then I shopped around for price on the internet and found what I wanted on Amazon. I feel I can trust their service; they are always efficient. The binoculars arrived in two days, very well packaged. Really pleased.

Famtastic addition to our outdoor adventure kit. Lightweight with great carry case make it almost impossible to forget to take them with you.
I bought them as a gift for my boyfriend, they are watertight too do the lenses never mist up or become distorted in any way whatever the weather!!

Physically these binoculars are quite small, about 13cms wide by 11cms front to back, but their performance is huge. They are excellent at distance and through the range to 0.5m where they are fantastic. Retaining the binocular effect through internal shifting of the optics for near objects one gets a true 3D effect. I was looking at a Minox close focusing monocular but these are so much better. All the focusing movements are internal and the build quality is superb, as you would expect from Pentax, and a 30year guarantee(!). Complete with lovely case and quick fit strap. If you buy one you will not be disappointed.

We've been waiting several months before submitting this review so we could give these Pentax 8.5x21 Close Focus Papilio Binoculars a good try out. And they are excellent. We've had several pairs of binoculars between us over the years, but these are outstanding - definitely the best. 8.5x suits us very well for general outdoor use, giving adequate power without the tremor effects that you can experience with the 10x or 12x types. Light .. powerful .. compact .. crystal clear images (as you would expect from Pentax optics) .. and an amazing focussing range - yes, you really can examine the grasshopper sitting on your shoes! and then see it clearly again fifteen feet away. The binoculars come with a snug detachable case, a neck strap; plus a double eyepiece soft plastic lens cover for protecting both eyepieces when not in use, it threads on the strap so doesn't get dropped. One eyepiece adjusts to accomodate differences in eyesight between your eyes. These are brilliant binoculars - we've stopped lugging our off-puttingly heavy and bulky old ones around with us now! Highly recommended.
